John Hodgman’s Racial Categories

by on September 9th, 2006

John Hodgman (the “PC” from the recent apple ads, and author of Areas of my Expertise) is a regular guest on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In this clip he tackles the increasing difficulty demographers face in tackling ever more complex racial categories by offering up a handy new system of his own. I don’t think colonial (and post-colonial) anthropologists could have done any better.

(Sorry the sound is a bit out of sync, but you take what you can get on YouTube!)

P. Kerim Friedman is an assistant professor in the Department of Ethnic Relations and Cultures at National Dong Hwa University, in Taiwan, where he teaches linguistic and visual anthropology. He is co-director of the film Please Don't Beat Me, Sir!, winner of the 2011 Jean Rouch Award from the Society of Visual Anthropology. Follow Kerim on Twitter.

If you want better sound quality you can view the video on the daily show website
Daily Show Hodgman Video they have a pretty detailed catalogue of clips.

For mac users you can use Flip4Mac to save as a QuickTime and easily add to a powerpoint for use in class (if you do not have internet access in class). The net neutrality video is hilarious also, I am using in my digital cultures class.

I know no one reads old comments, but hey I noted this ages ago! My link is a bit out of date but I think you can watch other clips from the same show there. God I’m pedantic.
