Anthropology Trivia!

I never knew that Marshall Sahlins’ brother is Bernard (Bernie) Sahlins, Co-founder of The Second City comedy troupe!

There is no Wikipedia page for Bernard, but the relationship is mentioned here and here.

(I did, however, know that Laura Nader is Ralph’s sister.)

P. Kerim Friedman is an assistant professor in the Department of Ethnic Relations and Cultures at National Dong Hwa University, in Taiwan, where he teaches linguistic and visual anthropology. He is co-director of the film Please Don't Beat Me, Sir!, winner of the 2011 Jean Rouch Award from the Society of Visual Anthropology. Follow Kerim on Twitter.

Bernie Sahlins is famous in Chicago. Did you know how he got the money to establish Second City? He invented the rewind for tapes.

Supposedly the family joke was that their mother was always disappointed that Marshall wasn’t as successful as Bernie!!!! Very funny from the point of view of academics — many of us face that social attitude that our work is unimportant.

  2. But did you know Ursula Leguin is Alfred Kroeber’s daughter? Or that Jim Judge is Mike Judge’s (Beavis and Butthead) father?

(my brain is a swirl of pop culture trivial)

  3. Thanks Kris! I think I might have heard about the Leguin Kroeber connection at some time in the distant past, but I’d completely forgotten about it.

And the historian Peter Sahlins is his son…less well known then the other two, but he wrote a great book about France and Spain called Boundaries.
