AAA in Montreal: Open Thread

So what’s going down at this year’s AAA meeting in Montreal?  What are YOU up to?  What panels are looking good?  What are people talking about?  Any big debates heating up?  Any amazingly fantastic talks so far?  Have you met your anthropological hero?  How’s the food in the city?  Who’s there?  Are the elevators crowded?  What about the books–have you bought too many already?  Are you ready for your presentation, or what?  Nervous?  Or excited?  Is this your first time at the meetings?  What are your reactions?  Use this thread to post news, share your thoughts, and tell us all about your experiences at this year’s mass gathering of anthropologists.

  1. I am thinking of driving up for Friday morning for sessions at AAA that may have some connection to natural resources — specially mining and indigenous rights related issues. Any suggestions? I dont have the program and was planning to just get a day pass on arrival.

  2. The Occupy AAA General Assembly Thursday night was a success — lots of people from all over, various interests represented, lots of energy: working groups and next steps defined. Anyone in Montreal who’s interested, we’re gathering again Friday at noon in Viger Hall (big lobby by the information booth, bottom of the escalators). Next steps include network building, connecting with Occupy Montreal and Accessible AAA, more. On twitter follow #OccupyAAA and/or #DecolonizeAAA. Peace.

  3. Really enjoying the AAA. My second time attending; first time presenting. I think I value most getting the chance to see folks whom I’ve missed over the year. I’m also curious about checking out the Occupy Montreal encampment, a few blocks from the conference. Cheers all,
    D.

  4. Last night in Montreal I watched and took pictures as Occupy Montreal members were escorted by police as they marched through the neighborhood drumming and chanting. Not beaten by police, not arrested, they received a police escort that stopped traffic for them. I was impressed by that, and by the organization of the encampment. I wish it were that genial here. 🙁
