O’Reilly’s Churchill Crusade

In the Columbia Journalism Review Daily, Brian Montopoli investigates Bill O’Reilly’s ongoing crusade against University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill. It turns out that Ward Churchill has been mentioned by O’Reilly on no less than 25 separate occasions.

Maybe we can get O’Reilly to give Savage Minds that kind of publicity? Then when I’m asked what my “greatest weakness” is in a job interview I can quote Bill O’Reilly: “Right wing radio hosts say I’m a ‘terrorist weasel’, but I think that this is really one of my strengths.”

  1. If my great, great grandmother was reported to have been Native I would be sporting eagle feathers too and loving a fat paycheck for it. The last I heard, Ward had finally decided to be a Creek Indian. Bill probably lumps plagarism, fabrication, false attribution in the academic and non-academic world with anti-Americanism, all under the same heading of rank heresy. Maybe he can find it in his heart to accuse anthropologists of inciting geurilla war in Borneo or someplace like that. Send him an anonymous tip that a couple of Anthros from Berkeley were Taliban enforcers in Afghanistan while pretending to do field work. That oughta’ fire ol’ Bill up and get some free publicity for this forum.

  2. Apropos this — the below is from James Wolcott’s very funny blog; there is so often a method to right-wing madness:

“They began by picking a mostly obscure minor offender like Ward Churchill in the hopes of bagging him and moving on to bigger trophies.”

Churchill has made of himself a cartoonishly easy target — but throwing him to the wolves will just whet their appetites.
