I am reminded of a report decades ago from the shores of late Titicaca, where an archaeologist found evidence of raised of ancient raised beds separated by narrow channels. The latter acted as heat sinks, raising ambient overnight temperatures fractionally so adjacent plants could survived freezing nighttime temperatures.

Lake-shore villagers there were reluctant to adopt this unfamiliar agricultural innovation, but a farmer who attempted to introduce the method in a nearby village fared far worse: he was attacked by neighbors and castrated.

When a majority of legislators in our purportedly advanced society, in lock step, refuse to consider science on climate vulnerability, it hardly should surprise that residence in such a fragile environment react violently to the unfamiliar.

Courtney! When I read the title of this post I thought, "huh, that sounds somewhat like Courtney's research...I wonder if it's her"--and it is! Thank you for sharing some of your work and making salient the complex environmental and social devastation these people continue to face. Here's hoping they find ways forward...
