The election of Trump and the alt-right populism that his campaign propelled to center stage was borne on the back of misinformation. Misinformation that dispersed so freely because we (academics, students, scholars, etc.) do not do such a great job of teaching what we have learned back to the public: critical thinking skills and the applied value of what we do as researchers. We do need to change that. The enemy is at the gates. We cannot retreat to our cloisters to read scripture. We should be on the walls with everyone else.

While I do not think the read-in idea does any harm, I do not necessarily see how it helps. We engage with each other enough. Should we not pivot our engagement efforts to the wider public? Does this read-in not seem to fit the stereotype of academic elites retreating to the ivory tower to shout into their echo boxes?
