Very interesting post. I am a Ph.D. student of anthropology from Brazil, and I am interested in bicycle-related issues, mainly that ones related to political and "urban" themes. Next year I start my fieldwork among "bicicleteiros" of Critical Mass (Massa Crítica or bicicleta, as you use to refer to it here) in Recife, a big city in Brazil's Northeast. Let me see if I understand, you said you've created a public listserv; could I subscribe to it? How could I do this?

Roberto, my collaborator Sarah just told me about this new book by Louis Mendoza called A Journey Around Our America, in which he travels around the U.S. visiting Latino communities. It sounds really interesting, and maybe it's what you're looking for. On our research listserv we're talking about studies of bike touring right now, there haven't been many, but a lot of bike tourists end up writing interesting work about their travels. Have a good trip!

Very interesting article, I would like to find more information on anthropological studies concerning long bike travels. I am not an anthropologist or a scholar but I am currently heading along my girlfriend a project called Tasting Travels. Our project seeks to promote bike travel as a means to strengthen social empathy. We believe in this idea but are looking for sources to sustain our thesis for maybe a future masters or P.H.D. scholarship. Thank you very much. I will follow your blog.

Very interesting article, I liked your analysis of the separate groups that make up bicycling. We share a common interest in studying the bicycle academically. Im getting ready to start at Davis and I look forward to following your work at Irvine. You can see some of the research and projects Im doing at www.facebook.com/bikeforit

Hi Harald, many bike researchers I know use an STS framework productively. Some of Wiebe Bijker's work on STS concepts came through his study of the development of the safety bicycle, and that's what first made me think about STS and bikes. But also bicycling is a great example of the interface between humans and other phenomena. I'm interested in how the formation of our own field is also a case for STS concepts, such as closure.

Very interesting post. I'm coming from an STS background and am very much interested in bike-related issues. My own research is/was in other areas, but I think using anthropology and STS would be excellent tools for studying and understanding bicycle cultures or "non-cultures." Will check out your blog right away!
