All very expected, especially given the political climate. On the perceived and somewhat disingenuously expressed need to foster students' treatment as "individuals," this gets to the trend through history (and presumably prehistory) from "dependence training" to "independence training". With the process of "atomization", which John Collier used to describe the effects of "Indian Reorganization," we have better circumstances for molding ethnic "individuals" into "mainstream" citizens after Lynne Cheney's and many others' frankly ethnocentric preference.

Of my relatives who happen to be Latino, most are meeting and even rewriting the challenges of mastering "mainstream" professional culture with great success. Had any of them been deprived of strong "ethnic studies" as part of their socialization, both formal and informal, I feel sure they would bring a somewhat duller, less imaginative perspective to their lives and work than they do.

I sympathize with your reluctance to broach the ugly implications here, and in that connection I also notice that I've made ugly overuse of "shudder quotes."

Tom Horne wasn't born in the United States. He was born in Canada. Yes....I know it's Canada, not our neighbors to the south. It seems that only people promoting REAL critical thinking and allowing students to come to their own conclusions are the teachers. No more cookie-cutter curriculum to promote what it is that politicians see fit for our children to learn. If we keep the blinders on them much longer, we are in for a serious problem!

Look a little more closely. This amendment passed in a committee vote of 4-3, but stills needs to be passed by both houses of the Arizona legislature before it is "set to be signed into law" by the governor. Let us hope that more rational heads vote it out before it reaches that point.

"They may be hispanic, but they ARE in America."

Right -- and America is Hispanic. And Somali. And Hmong. And African-American. And Ashkenazi. And Iraqi. And Swedish. And Chinese. And yes, even White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. Folks like Cheney and Horne want to privilege the white part, at the expense of all the other parts. And unfortunately, for all manner of historical reasons, they have the power to do so, to a great degree. Doesn't make it right, doesn't make it best, and doesn't make it American.

I believe it's thinking like this that makes it more and more difficult for minorities to assimilate into American culture. Those that don't are going to always be viewed , to varying degrees, as outsiders. This, I think, continues to fuel racism. Let the kids learn what everyone else is learning.
