Patience

Please don’t e-mail us or post a comment letting us know that one of your comments is in moderation. At least not right away. We try to check the moderation queue as often as is humanely possible, and if it is there we will see it. Occasionally, something goes to the SPAM queue instead of the moderation queue, in which case we will miss it, but most of the time that’s not the case. Most of the time it is in the moderation queue and will be pushed to the blog as soon as we get around to checking it. Sending us unnecessary e-mail and comments only slows us down…

  1. Additionally, if you do have a comment in moderation, it might not be the best idea to leave another, separate comment on the blog _saying_ that you have a post in moderation. I think it just makes the spam filter trust you less. Ditto for small notes correcting typos — if you’re willing to let it ride I think it will keep the filter on a tighter leash.

  2. Would it help to give links the nofollow value? The blog’s filter is very officious. In a world full of problems a blog filter isn’t one, but improving it might well improve the quality of your blog—when a thread actually evolves into a conversation the conversation tends to move past those comments waiting in the moderation queue.

  3. I think it’s interesting that we are looking for patterns in the way the filter works, and developing a kind of techno folkway for interacting with it. Using concepts like “trust” with an algorithm. I imagine that this is exactly how magic as a concept develops among people as they struggle to regulate the world around them.
