Thank you very much for this post. I'm writing my PhD on Ursula K. LeGuin at the moment and I hope it means there is something new to say - or at least that her books can be viewed from a different angle. Especially that I do it in Poland, where LeGuin's books, especially "The Left Hand of Darkness", have rarely been associated with anthropology, but during the 1970s and 1980s gained cult status.

Prof. Roy Wagner (http://www.virginia.edu/anthropology/faculty/wagner.html) teaches "Fantasy and Social Values" at the University of Virginia. One of the best classes I have ever had, by far. He begins the semester with Left Hand of Darkness and moves on to The Dispossessed, then on to Dune, Enders Game, and finishes with Ridley Walker (when I took it in the fall of 05). Le Guin is great for teaching Anthro and should be used much more offten!

Am re-reading Rocannon's World these days, and assigned the Left Hand of Darkness to first year students this semester for a class on research methods and description in ethnography. Cannot agree more with your post. Good one.

For my senior seminar regarding the narrative structures of enthnographies at UCSC, Susan Harding included Le Guin's "Changing Planes" in addition to Malinowski, James Clifford, and others. Great class, interesting discussions. I heartily recommend Le Guin's work to others in anthro.
