But Earl Shorris has a good critique in the Nation. And there’s a quick round up of the critiques from anthropologists and linguists on Savage Minds, including the SNL remix. The spoof plays off of Mel’s drunken ramblings not the (once again) demonization of indigenous peoples and the western savior-complex embodied in such films via Hollywood. If Mel hadn’t been caught spewing anti-semitic misogynistic hate, would there have been an SNL spoof? Not likely. I'm honored for such an honorable mention. Full disclosure, though: I had embedded the clip and a few hours later an error message started showing up saying the video had been removed for copyright reasons. Obviously it's back on YouTube but I had since deleted the original post from my blog because I didn't want a dead YouTube link. Not sure why my archive link still works, though. Point being I have yet to hear from anyone that would be offended by the parody (except maybe Mel himself). Thanks for the honor! I’m honored for such an honorable mention.
