Dr. Jason James (University of Mary Washington) and I have organized and submitted a panel for the American Anthropological Association Meeting in November:
2-158

Ethnographies of Preservation: The Contemporary Politics of Architectural Heritage

4:00 PM to 5:45 PM

Willow Glen III-2nd Flr-Marriott San Jose

This is a panel on the politics of historic preservation as an aspect of urban renewal. Although heritage conservation has become a prominent subject of ethnographic study, the preservation of historic buildings, neighborhoods, and urban morphologies has not received as much careful attention. At the same time, preservation now plays an important role in many renewal and redevelopment schemes.

Papers are focused on the politics of preservation in the narrower sense, but also address issues of authenticity, bureaucracy, identity, class conflict, and cultural property. Robert Rotenberg is on board as a discussant. A full abstract is available at www.susanmazur.com.

These sound like great sessions. I'm co-organizing a session on Friday morning at 8am called Beyond E-Text: Exploring the challenges and possibilities of Digital Ethnography. Many of the presentations will feature some interesting experiments in hypermedia. My own presentation will explore the possibilities and challenges that various "Web 2.0" technologies might offer for ethnography. I'll be sure to mention Savage Minds!
